Pakistan Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologists (PACTA) holds regular conferences, symposiums, and Hand on Workshop where its members meet to exchange ideas, present scientific papers, and hold formal and informal meetings.
PACTA is to make available the highest standards of cardiac Anaesthesia. To have a competent cardiac Anaesthesiologists, we need to have a good training program CME and continue professional development in all aspects of Anaesthesia, said PACTA president Prof. Rana Altaf Ahmed at Karachi Annual Conference. On this occasion, Federal State Minister for Health Dr. Mahesh Malani MNA said, "The Anesthesiologist of yesterday was an indispensable part of the surgical team whose only job was confined to the operation theatres, but today, things have changed in the sense that Anesthesiologist is also involved in a wide range of other clinical disciplines further he said Anesthetist is an Intensivist in Critical Care Medicine, an important member of Resuscitation in the Trauma team and also a key person in managing Acute and Chronic pain" Minster of view The world can indeed be a better place when suffering is reduced to a minimum. In this regard, everyone is expected to play his particular role skillfully and competently.
Prof. Amin Khuwaja, General Secretary PACTA, While presenting his report, informed the delegates that PACTA, in collaboration with different cardiac Anaesthesia Departments of Pakistan, is conducting CMEs and hands-on workshops in their respective hospitals, said that looking at the increasing demand for cardiac Anaesthetists, Pakistan Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist and committee of cardiothoracic Anaesthesia at CPSP proposed that the FCPS in cardiothoracic Anesthesia should be the first fellowship. In 2020 this matter was presented and was kept on the agenda of the faculty of Anaesthesia at CPSP, and after multiple meetings and discussions and formulating curriculum, got approval from the council of CPSP on 21st July 2022. So now candidates, after completing intermediate module training in General Anaesthesia, can opt for a fellowship in cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. They must work in a recognized cardiac institute for the next three years. It was a long-awaited debate which was resolved with the consciences of the committee of CTA at CPSP and PACTA—Chairperson scientific committee, Dr. Mohd. Hamid, while presenting an overview of the scientific program, said the Theme of this conference is "New Horizons in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia", and about the hands-on workshop on the point of care ultrasound in ICU and symposium on TEE, he said it was warm welcoming responsive in both preconference sessions and was a suggestion from participants that these should be conducted frequently.
A lifetime achievement award was given to Prof. Younis Khatri and Prof. Rehana Kamal for their dedicated work in the field of Cardiac Anaesthesia. Both respectable professors emphasize that an earnest effort should be made to encourage research and publications to be published in international journals and presented in National and International forums, besides offering opportunities to interact and learn from each other.
An extravagant Gala dinner was arranged on Saturday evening. This was followed by a program featuring performances of famous artists, which rendered the evening memorable. On a Sunday afternoon, the closing ceremony was followed by a PACTA business session in which new cabinet members and a new executive committee were elected. "This conference was intellectually stimulating and academically and socially pleasing," remarked a senior anaesthetist delegate from another city. "This conference will serve as a landmark and a standard for others to compare with", said another.

A Symposium was organized on 23rd March 2011 by Pakistan Association of
Cardiothoracic Anesthesia (PACTA) at TABBA Heart Institute Karachi.
The Inaugural session started after recitation of holy Quran followed by welcome address
by chair organizing committee Dr Hamid Aqil Naqvi consultant TABBA Heart Institute.
The oath taking ceremony for new office bearer was conducted by patron PSA Prof. S
Tipu Sultan.
The 2 years activities of PACTA was highlighted by outgoing president Prof. Fazal
Hameed, who also emphasized to focus on education and teaching in cardiac anesthesia
as a second fellowship has already been started by CPSP. It was followed by speeches
by incoming president Dr Shahab Naqvi, AFIC, and Prof. S Tipu sultan. They
emphasized that establishment of PACTA was a dream which is now a reality and hoped
that PACTA would help in promotion of knowledge and improvement in clinical skill and
practice in cardiothoracic anesthesia. In the end chief guest CEO TABBA heart institute
delivered his speech by appreciating formation of PACTA and extended his offer to
cooperate in future also.
A shield was presented for life time achievement in cardiac anesthesia to Prof. Rehana
Kamal from AKU. As she was out of country Dr Hamid Aqil Naqvi received the shield on
her behalf. Another shield was presented to Prof. Younus Khatri for his contribution in
cardiac anesthesia.
The scientific program comprised of two sessions. The program started by a presentation
by Dr Zameer Rajput, Shifa Islamabad, who highlighted the challenges of providing safe
anesthesia in lung cancer surgery, followed by Dr Khalid Rasheed a Cardiac surgeon
from TABBA Heart Institute, who presented his approach and management strategies for
dealing with urgent & emergent CABG; Prof Najma Amjad, NICVD, spoke on myocardial
protection during off pump surgery; Dr Rana Altaf CPEIC Multan express his views on
prevention of organ failure following high risk cardiac surgery. Dr Shahid Sami a cardiac
surgeon from South City Hospital Karachi discussed surgical techniques and other
relevant issues that affect the decision-making process In dealing with Functional MR; Dr
Safdar gave his opinion on quality assurance in cardiothoracic anesthesia.
In post lunch session Arrhythmia During Period of CABG , Prevention vs. Treatment was
discussed by Prof Sadqa from DUHS, Dr M Hamid described challenges in Pakistan for
open heart pediatric surgery and presented statistics of pediatric surgeries performed all
over Pakistan. For the first time a perfusionist Ejaz Haider from AKU and a staff nurse
Shenaz Nadeem from TABBA Heart Institute participated in such forum and presented
myocardial protection during CPB surgery and fast track cardiac surgery & nursing
perspective respectively.
Post-lunch Scientific session included a free paper session in which six papers were
presented by anesthetists involved in cardiac anesthesia from all over Pakistan, this
generated a lively and exciting discussion for sharing multicentre experiences which was
much appreciated by both seniors and juniors. The whole event was a great success and
ended with hope of promoting a high standard of scientific presentations in future.
